White Language Supremacy

The Harm Caused from White Language Supremacy           Throughout the years in schooling, every year felt like re-learning how to write properly. I would move from one teacher to the next throughout middle and high school, and of course there was sometimes a little overlap in the general rules of writing. However, every teacher would always have to teach me what their designation of ‘good writing’ is and what the ‘correct’ method is to write. On top of that, many of my teachers, such as Mr. Howe, didn’t like the way I wrote because it was atypical. This was largely due to the fact that I was born and raised in France and didn’t begin to learn the ‘rules’ of writing until I was older. But I am obviously not the only one faced with this barrier of writing and overall communication that falls outside the norm.    Did writing used to be something you loved and then that sensation slowly vanished because of academia writing? Writing used to be such an integral part of my life. I loved writing when I moved to the U.S. because we were able to write about anything we wanted and it allowed us to be creative on the page. After leaving elementary school, that love of writing quickly became a dislike. Writing wasn’t a leisure anymore, it was a chore, a hassle, a point of contention. It felt like every year, it was a new teacher telling you how to write and how they defined good writing was different from the teacher from the year before. Once I was in high school, I thought that I was going to hate writing for the rest of my life until sophomore year when the candle was relit.  During my first two years of high school, I had two of the most cartoon characters like English teachers.
